SMEs are demanding more green products in the workplace, reports greenwisebsuiness.co.uk.
A survey by online retailer Alibaba.com has found that requests from SMEs for more environmentally friendly items has significantly increased, indicating that many businesses are attempting to reduce their carbon footprint.
The government reports that SMEs account for 60 per cent of the work force and contribute to 45 per cent of business energy usage.
Searches for energy-efficient lighting had doubled, solar heaters increased by 45 per cent and "green" fridges had been sought out 258 per cent more times than a year ago. Additionally, SMEs have been searching for sustainable stationery.
Despite these findings, the government report suggests that only 22 per cent of SMEs are investing in more eco-friendly alternatives, but lack of funds is no longer an excuse for not purchasing the energy-efficient options.
Invoice finance and factoring services can help release money quickly, before bills have been settled, ensuring there is cash available to a business at any time of the month.
In any case, making the switch to environmentally friendly office products can generate economic rewards in the long run, plus benefit the planet.
Alibaba.com general manager Maggie Choo reiterated the importance of minimising emissions to Green Economy, saying: "Though many small and medium businesses may feel that the green economy adds additional pressure to an already challenging struggle to survive, it's important to look to the future and recognise that those failing to embrace sustainability will struggle to attract both investors and customers.
"Being environmentally sustainable makes increasingly good business sense."
